Grow:Brixton
Popes Road corner of Brixton Station Road
London, SW9

Grow:Brixton will be London’s newest and most unusual up-cycled container campus. Building starts this Autumn, and the site will be opened in phases up until Spring 2015. It will provide a supportive community for start up and small businesses with priority being given to those who benefit Brixton and the wider Lambeth area, by either being based locally and/or offering training and jobs opportunities. To rent a unit with us is to enter into the spirit of belonging to the local community, complementing, not competing and enhancing Brixton’s already thriving market area.

Alongside studio and workshop space, there will be areas for retail outlets, studios for small businesses, live/work units and a central courtyard, the only such open air, enclosed public space in Brixton. An entertainment zone will host film screenings, music and performance arts, showcasing community projects and private events. There are plans for it to have a recording studio to provide training opportunities for locals in music production.

There will be a variety of 20′ and 40′ container units available. The rents will vary according to the position of the unit on the site. Some units can be joined or split and/or shared by businesses.

retail/studio units = 40’ x 8’ + 20’ x 8’
kiosk units = 10’ x 8’
live/work units = 20’ x 16’ + 40’ x 8’

They will be fitted out with basic interiors, with large window openings and a glazed sliding entrance door. The existing container doors will be retained to act as secure shutters for use at night; during the day they can be left open.

The interior fit out will be simple and robust. A timber frame is fitted internally, combined with a layer of insulation, onto which plywood linings are attached. Electrical services – low energy lighting and electric space heating will be standard.

Stairs and walkways will be formed from standard key-clamp type scaffold components.

All applications will be considered individually and will be asked to put together a simple and short expression of interest. This will cover a brief description of their business – Are they living or working locally? Is it a start up, growing or relocating an existing business? How many employees, existing and proposed? What will they be doing? Is it a public facing, interactive or studio based? They’ll be asked to provide basic financial information – years of trading, last three years of profit / turnover (if available) and/or projected figures. We will also be asking what training and mentoring opportunities can be offered by them for the local community.
